Meet U 505, one of six German submarines captured by Allied forces in WW2 and one of only four surviving.

For reasons of secrecy (her codebooks had been captured) her crew were held incommunicado, denied access to the Red Cross and interned until 1947, the Geneva Convention notwithstanding.

She was built by Deutsche Werft who later became Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft and later still part of Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems who still make submarines.

Her engines are from MAN who still make those too.

Want to visit her? She’s at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

I toured that sub about 40 years ago. The Museum of Science and Industry is fantastic. They've got a Spitfire hanging in the main hall.

They do, and there’s an audio tour.

The MSI is one of the best museums in the world.

They do. It’s pretty cool.

They also used to keep it outside, and it was quite the project to move it around and into the building.

Fun boat to tour, especially if you’ve played video games like Silent Hunter III

I remember seeing this when I was about 7. I want to go back and see it again with a grown up pair of eyes because at 7 years old you don’t really appreciate the sub how it is supposed to be.

They still do, along with a boeing 707 among other things

I recommend it, my wife and I went down with my mother and brother in law before Christmas and it’s still probably one of the most fun things to do downtown when it’s freezing or raining outside. I can’t wait to take my son

Back in my ancient days, the U-505 was outside in the elements. They didn’t have that concrete cavern covering it. But I haven’t been there in more than 20 years.

That is an awesome museum. I went there back in ‘08, but by the time we arrived from the north side (via rail), the tours through the sub were sold out, even though I was with a museum member. Now that I’m much closer to Chicago than I was (moved from SoCal to STL), I’ll have to go up there again and see if I can finally get a tour.

I lived in Oak Park in the early-70s, and Chicago was an epic place for field trips. It seemed like we were always going to to the SI Museum, the Field Museum, the Adler Planetarium, the Cernan Space Center. Too many to remember now. My kids are lucky if they get one field trip a year.

You are correct. And there’s a frickin’ 727 hanging in there, too! Time to go back for another visit.

One of the few complete Stukas in existence. I need to go there next time I'm in Chicago.

Here in TX, the schools do not have enough money to fund field trips. The cost of the bus alone is insanely prohibitive. That’s why the PTA pays for them. One of our primary purposes for fund raising is to give the kids opportunities to learn outside the classroom. The state doesn’t pay for s**t these days.

Looking at the pictures of the interior and thinking that was the last thing so many people saw. Pretty cool, but seriously: fuck submarines. I couldn’t do it.

Go back and see it, it is awesome. I toured it a few years ago when I was in Chicago for a conference. We should have taken all day to tour the museum but only had a couple of hours. It was definitely worth the extra money to tour the sub.

They had a lot of neat stuff around it too like a functioning periscope and a cutaway torpedo. There was a guy demonstrating bouyancy. He had some silly putty and a tub of water and challenged me to make it float. For some reason he was surprised that it took me all of 10 seconds to make a boat, and then he wanted me to explain why it floated. After that he said something along the lines of “well, I’ve got nothing, how did you know that?” /engineered.
